Sleeper Floor Construction

Measure and cut the sleepers as you would for a concrete floor but position the sleepers in one of two ways.

In a closet or pantry. One way that builders have designed to mitigate the spread of rot involves laying extra pieces of wood called sleepers. Or as specified by the flooring manufacturer. This stops any build up of condensation and is assisted by building in airbricks through the external walls.

Set out the sleepers along the perimeter of the room and in their approximate locations across the rest of the floor cutting them to length as necessary. Avoid a sleeper layout where the boards are parallel to the joists but run between them because this configuration lacks structural support. By placing your straight edge along the wall you can insert it between the floor covering and wall sliding it down until it touches the subfloor.

Then install a moisture barrier and place pt 2x4 studs flat every 16 with rigid foam insulation in between them. Install plywood over sleepers at 90 degree angle to direction of finished flooring 1 4 spacing all edges and breaking joints 4.
