The installation of a natural slate roofing depends on the slate type the style and the design. Standard roof slate sizes range from 6 x10 to 14 x24 and everything in between. There are two methods of fixing natural roofing slates. This means using a roof deck material with a known and proven longevity of a century and a half which includes solid lumber at least 3 4 inch thick and some other decking materials such as nailable concrete and gypsum.

The 6x10 slates require 686 slates per square a square is one hundred square feet of roof coverage while the 14x24 only require 98 slates per square. Class a roof assemblies also include ferrous or copper shingles or sheets metal sheets and shingles clay or concrete roof tile or slate installed on noncombustible decks or ferrous copper or metal sheets installed without a roof deck on noncombustible framing. The thickness of the slates also affects the weight.
